Growing Churches Need Volunteers

It’s no secret. Volunteers play a critical role in a growing church. You’ll never have enough staff to fulfill your ministry vision on your own. If you do, your vision is too small anyway.

Of course, it takes time to recruit, empower, and celebrate volunteers in a manner that’s effective. Veteran church communicators Nils Smith, chief strategist of social media at Dunham and Company, and Haley Veturis, social media manager at Saddleback Church, recently shared on a Pushpay webinar their secret weapon to doing this.
It’s social media.

Social Media Is Where the Fish Are

It’s no surprise why social media is so effective at connecting with volunteers. Nils pointed to some of the mind-boggling social media stats to demonstrate this:

“Social media has become this platform where people are spending so much of their time, engaging in real, meaningful relationships. Just look at the stats of Facebook. They’ve now moved to more than two billion monthly users. It’s unbelievable. Those users aren’t just logging into the website, but they’re spending on average 22 minutes a day.”

Haley said it like this: “Jesus has called His people to be disciples and to be fishers of men. The fish are on social media.”

Tips for Engaging Volunteers

Nils and Haley then turned their direction to specific tips for engaging potential and current volunteers on social media. Among other topics, the two tackled:
