So the decision in 2026 isn’t whether to send messages. It’s identifying which software is best for your needs.

There are a couple different options to evaluate. The first is standalone platforms like Clearstream and Flocknote, built around message volume and inbox features. The second: texting that lives inside the software already holding your people data, like Pushpay, Tithely, or Planning Center. The standalone services usually win on SMS-specific features. The integrated options win on not maintaining a second contact database that drifts out of sync the week someone updates their number in only one place.

Every tier includes unlimited email, two-way inbox conversations, text-to-join keywords, and automated workflows. Churches on Planning Center or Pushpay’s CCB can sync lists through native integrations, which softens the second-database problem considerably.

The credit model is the thing to watch. Credits expire monthly, and messages with images, emojis, or more than 160 characters consume extra credits.

Flocknote

Flocknote prices by member count instead of message volume: free for life under 40 people, $10/month at 41 to 50, climbing from there. Standard texting and email are unlimited at every tier. For a small church, that combination is about as cheap as legitimate mass texting gets in 2026, since carrier registration requirements have effectively killed the free DIY options.

Two things make Flocknote distinct in this lineup. First, the Catholic depth. Sacrament tracking, religious education registration, and ready-to-send content from partners like Word on Fire ship with the Complete package ($75/month on top of base pricing), and the Enterprise tier handles diocesan structures with subnetworks syncing to a parent account. Standalone, it’s a fair price for a small church. Inside All Access, it’s effectively a free add-on for churches already committed to the Tithely suite. Planning Center’s texting is the most limited option here, and to their credit, they don’t pretend otherwise. You pay $5/month for a dedicated toll-free number, then $0.02 per outgoing credit, sending to lists you build in People. Replies are not received. That’s not a buried limitation; it’s stated plainly in their help documentation, and they openly point churches with bigger needs toward Clearstream and other integrated texting partners.

For a 100-person church on Planning Center that messages the congregation once or twice a month, this is perfectly serviceable and costs almost nothing. For weekly broadcasts, guest follow-up sequences, or anything conversational, you’ll outgrow it fast. Which is presumably why Clearstream built a Planning Center integration. Contract terms get less attention than rates, and they shouldn’t. Here’s how flexibility breaks down:
