5 Giving Tuesday Ideas For #iGiveCatholic

What Is #iGiveCatholic All About?

On Giving Tuesday, observed annually on the Tuesday following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, individuals and organizations will come together to celebrate generosity. It’s a day dedicated to collectively doing good for others, from showing kindness towards your neighbor to supporting your favorite cause. It was created in 2012 to respond to the growing consumerism during the holidays surrounding Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It grew into a global movement of philanthropists and, by 2015, inspired the U.S. Catholic Church’s Giving Day campaign #iGiveCatholic.

It was first created by the Archdiocese of New Orleans to offer parishes, schools, and nonprofit ministries a platform to fundraise on Giving Tuesday. The Giving Tuesday nonprofit provided marketing materials, training, and support to help them lead a successful campaign.

Impact On Catholic Ministries

After success in the first year, five dioceses joined the initiative the following year. Today, 40 dioceses and archdioceses across the country participate. According to igivecatholic.org, the campaign raised more than $16.5 million in 2021 for over 2,600 parishes, schools, and non-profit ministries. Donors can follow giving totals and select a ministry to support on the website.

For Catholics, generosity is giving back to God out of gratitude for His blessings. To help you encourage your parishioners to give to Catholic parishes, dioceses, schools, and ministries on Giving Tuesday, use these five tips to make their giving experience easier:

1. Use push notifications instead of email

Did you know that the open rates for push notifications are 50% higher than emails? Though a relatively new channel, it’s becoming extremely effective. ParishStaq’s rich push notifications allow parishes and dioceses to send custom messages directly to a mobile device. You can add an image, an attention-grabbing title, subtitle, emojis, and actions to engage your recipients to take the next step.

2. Provide a QR Code to your profile giving page

QR codes have made a comeback since the pandemic. It provides parishioners with an effortless and contact-free giving experience. At Pushpay, we’ve made the QR code creation process just as easy for our customers. For each QR code you generate, you can pre-configure the fund visibility, gift type, and default gift amount. Once you download your QR code, share it on your bulletin, newsletters, banners, email, or postcards to parishioners reminding them to give Catholic on Giving Tuesday.

3. Offer mobile giving in English and Spanish

Giving through church offering envelopes is a tradition still valued in the Church. But the use of digital devices is on the rise and the need to provide more ways to help parishioners express their gratitude to God for the gifts they’ve received is critical. Millennials have grown up with mobile phones and expect their digital experience to be fast and intuitive. On one of the Church’s most significant days for giving, provide your parishioners with ParishStaq’s three-second secure online and mobile giving experience with the option to toggle between English and Spanish.

4. Utilize social media

Share the hashtag #iGiveCatholic far and wide on your social media channels, and encourage parishioners to share your post. Curate a list of parishes, schools, or ministries that you support and post it on your social media accounts.

5. Thank your donors within seven days and share impact

Assign someone on your staff to keep track of donors. iGiveCatholic recommends sending a thank you note, email, phone call, or shout out in seven working days or less. Let them know how much their donation means to you and the people it will benefit. Parishioners value transparency so at Pushpay, we offer Impact Cards within our custom church app. Users can immediately see the campaign’s story and key accomplishments on the dynamic home screen.
